Beer-swilling, cigarette-puffing, hard-raving Red Star Belgrade players warned partying and pie-eating must stop


Refreshing to see Red Star Belgrade are keeping the spirit of 1970s and ’80s football alive.

Meat pies, beer, cigs and all-nighters are apparently par for the course for the Serbian side but their long-suffering coach Slavisa Stojanovic has had enough.

After his party-loving boys barely scraped past Icelandic minnows IBV (for whom former Liverpool goalkeeper David James dons the No.1 jersey, incidentally) in a recent Europa League qualifier, the beleaguered Stojanovic revealed the extent of the debauchery.

He said: ‘All the hard work you have done in the searing heat of pre-season build-ups will amount to nothing if you keep eating meat pies before practice and drinking two or three beers after it.

‘You have to rest properly and adopt an athlete’s diet otherwise your career will go down the drain.’

Red Star’s vice-president Nebojsa Covic added: ‘Cigarettes and nights out on boat-bars lined up along the river are also out…
