WATCH: Eight Grader Loses Final “Jeopardy!” Round Due to Misspelling

What is “12-year-old heart break “?

This is the question thousands of viewers voiced in response to a 12-year-old game show contestant losing the final round of “Jeopardy!” due to a misspelling in his otherwise correct answer.

Thomas Hurley III was in the last round of “Kids Jeopardy!” when he correctly answered a question about the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln. The eighth-grader wrote “Emanciptation” as his answer and was disqualified for misspelling his answer by host Alex Trebek.

The shocked contestant fought back tears as his family joined him on stage at the end of the show. Many viewers condemned the show on social media after it aired on July 31, and Hurley said he is “pretty upset” about the disqualification. However, even if he had not been disqualified, some have pointed out that Hurley would not have won the game, which was filmed in February.

  1. Thomas Hurley needs to be a good sport over Jeopardy! Alex Trebek is one of the best game show hosts in known history! Trebek is a cousin of a hero and saint, Craig A. Pepin!
