Cristiano Ronaldo to buy Real Madrid physios new cars after Ballon d’Or win

Metro

Cristiano Ronaldo was clearly overwhelmed after winning the Ballon d’Or title this week, but Real Madrid’s physio team were probably equally delighted.

Indeed, the group of special trainers who look after the Real team, including Ronaldo, are now in line to scoop a brand new car of their choice – after a special promise from the Portuguese forward.

According to reports in Spain, Ronaldo promised Madrid’s physios that if he won the Ballon d’Or, they would each get a new car, as a present for helping keep him fit in the last 12 months.

Leighton Baines’ snub of Manchester United is the right decision with the World Cup looming

Metro

I’ve heard a few people saying Leighton Baines has shown a distinct lack of ambition by sticking with Everton.

With a lucrative deal in the offing from the mighty Manchester United, what’s he thinking?

Well maybe, just maybe, he’s thinking about the World Cup. And is there a chance he’s happy where he is? A possibility he’s putting his family’s feelings to the fore, perhaps.

Let’s face it, things have been going pretty well for Baines.

He’s loved at Goodison, looks a fair bet to be England’s first choice left-back at the World Cup and seems to be happy and settled with his wife and kids on Merseyside.

Even if he could have raked in an extra few quid a week at Old Trafford, he’s probably set for life with the very decent wages he gets already – he’s hardly on a pittance.

It’s not a bad lot, is it?

Video: Brave shopkeeper fights off hammer-wielding robber

A real show of bravery and courage. Thank God the robber did not get away with some spoils. I really salute his courage.

Metro

A brave shopkeeper fought off a hammer-wielding robber in Stockport using a broken chair leg.

The incident happened on 8 December and police have now released CCTV footage of the attack in the hope they can identify the assailant.

The footage shows a man entering West Coast Wines on Lower Bents Lane, Bredbury, and launching an assault with a hammer.

Despite being under siege, the shopkeeper manages to pick up a broken chair leg and fend off the suspect.

Eventually another member of staff, who is off camera, comes to help and the offender flees.

Detective Constable James Grundy, based at Hazel Grove, said: ‘This robber ran off with his tail between his legs once he realised the odds were suddenly stacked against him.

‘He had unwisely chosen to hold up a shop where the staff were prepared to do what it takes to defend their property and livelihood.’

Hazard wants move to rival camp.

The CFC Blog

Thorgan-Hazard

Thorgan Hazard has expressed a desire to cut short his loan at Zulte-Waregem and link up with Anderlecht.

It was revealed on Wednesday that Hazard is wanted by the reigning Belgian champions on a deal until the end of the 2013/14 campaign.

In order for such a move to be made, Zulte would have to agree to the cancellation of their season-long agreement with Chelsea.

They have given no indication that they are willing to do that, with club boss Francky Dury adamant that Hazard is going nowhere.

The 20-year-old midfielder has, however, looked to take matters into his own hands and force the issue.

Hazard – the younger brother of Chelsea playmaker Eden – is keen to step up a level and believes a spell at Anderlecht would be of greater benefit to his ongoing development.

He told reporters in Belgium: “Yes, I want to go to Anderlecht.

“I’ve…

Quadruple hunt: Manchester City bid to succeed where Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all failed

Metro

Manchester City walloped Blackburn 5-0 to march into the fourth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday, keeping alive their bid for an unprecedented quadruple.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini has talked up hopes of landing all four trophies this season and two weeks into the new year, his masterplan is still very much on track.

City are second in the Premier League, face Watford in the next round of the FA Cup and have one foot firmly in the final of the Capital One Cup after trouncing West Ham 6-0 in the semi-final first leg.

They face a daunting task against Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16, but their home form especially must give them confidence.

Perennial silverware-chasers Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been in the position of chasing four pots just after Christmas, only to fall short during the business end of the season. Here, Metro looks back…

Michael Essien’s agent confirms midfielder’s imminent Chelsea exit

Metro

Michael Essien is set to end his eight-year association with Chelsea, according to the midfielder’s agent.

Essien was a key feature in the Blues’ title-winning sides in 2006 and 2010 but a succession of injuries in recent years has hampered his progress, and the Ghanaian spent last season on loan at Real Madrid.

Despite returning to Stamford Bridge with Jose Mourinho in the summer Essien has made just nine appearances this term, looking a shadow of his former self.

The 31-year-old’s bit-part role has led to speculation over his future, with reports linking him with a move to AC Milan in this month’s transfer window.

CLUB METRO:Where will Matic fit in Chelsea’s midfield

And while Essien’s agent Fabian Piveteau denies the former Lyon man is off to the San Siro, he has confirmed an exit from Stamford Bridge is imminent.

‘The player will leave Chelsea,’ Piveteau confirmed. ‘I have…
