Around 50,000 gallons of crude oil has spilt on to the streets of Los Angeles, the city’s fire department has said.
The leak was caused by a ruptured above-ground oil pipe just after midnight local time before the oil line was remotely shut off.
One witness said ‘it was raining oil’, with reports of the black liquid being ‘knee-high in some areas’.
Police say the oil spilled over approximately half a mile (800m) down a section of the Atwater Village area of the city.
‘Oil is knee-high in some areas,’ the fire department said. ‘A handful of commercial businesses are affected.’
No injuries were reported, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.
